Exchequer Leghorns

Let's start with a little history about us and Leghorns. There is something respectable about this light framed, alert, & efficient egg laying breed! I have always counted them as a staple in my flocks. After we moved the focus of our flocks/breeding to more colorful egg layers, we decided to quit breeding leghorns. (Check out the Blog Post about integrating new flock members to see a pic of our White Leghorn Flock in 2019.) I had a brief time around 2021 when I didn't have a single Leghorn in my flocks! I missed seeing that lovely, large, white egg in my basket, aside from the birds themselves!
That led to my discovery of Exchequer Leghorns! (Pronunciation: ex-checker) Beauty meets egg laying brawn with these ladies! The roosters and hens are truly striking with their mottled black and white feathers. I find these birds to be so elegant that I named our two main roosters in this line King and Knight. True to the nature of leghorns, they are flighty. Although, I do find them to be less skittish compared to the white or brown variations of the Leghorn breed. These eggcellent birds are beautiful, active, rarely go broody, lay plenty of medium to large white eggs, and have a great feed to egg conversion rate! That "checks" a lot of boxes! Although they may not lay eggs quite as large as traditional white Leghorns, these impressive birds more than make up for the difference in egg size with their striking appearance and comparatively more easy going temperament, in my opinion. :)
Our breed focus with our Exchequer Leghorn line is on improving the size of those lovely white eggs. We are quite happy with how they have produced for us so far and will continue breeding with this focus! At present, our gals lay nice sized medium to large eggs 5 times a week! As of the 2026 hatching season, we are proud to share these stunning and unique birds from our Exchequer Leghorn line with those of you who also love Leghorns and those big white eggs!
